GUEST SPEAKERS

Dr. Steve Hart

Dr. Steve Hart earned his B.S. and M.S. in Diary Science at Texas A & M and his Ph.D. in animal nutrition from Virginia Tech.  He joined the goat program at Langston University in 1990.  Dr. Hart has been involved in a number of goat nutrition studies over the years and has conducted a number of studies with goats from vegetation control in many different areas of Oklahoma. He gives talks on a variety of goat topics in Oklahoma and other states.  Dr. Hart actively conducts farm visits and responds to producer's goat questions.  Most of his research in the last several years has focused on controlling worms (internal parasites) in goats with pasture management.  He is actively investigating alternative dewormers such as lespedeza, copper oxide wire capsules and herbal dewormers.

Dr. Ann Wells, DVM
Springpond Holistic Animal Health
Prairie Grove, AR

An is a veterinarian with over 15 years experience in organic livestock production, including producing and selling organic lamb herself.  In private practice for 11 years and working on the ATTRA project for 9 years, she now has her own business working with producers and educators across the country on developing sustainable animal health management plans.  Her philosophy is to focus on the health of the animal through controlled grazing management and stress reduction techniques and strategies.  She feels very strongly that the health of the animal is tied to the health of the soil and plants and that decreasing stress is important in enhancing health.  She also believes that controlled (management-intensive) grazing is the best way to achieve health of all three components.

Bob Woods
Area Extension Agronomy Specialist
Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Northeast District

Bob grew up on a small cattle and sheep operation (and a few goats) in Payne County near Cushing, Oklahoma.  He obtained an Associates Degree from NEO & A & M at Miami, Oklahoma, and his B.S. degree in Animal Science from OSU.  After working as a 4-H agent in Pontotoc County, he returned to Stillwater for an M.S. degree in Agronomy specializing in forage management.  He has since worked as a County Ag Educator in Seminole County, IPM Agent in Grady County working with alfalfa, and since 1980 has been the Area Extension Agronomy Specialist in Northeast Oklahoma.  As area Agronomist his primary role is the development of educational programs in the areas of pasture and range management, and crop production.

Stefanie Oppenheim, MS, PhD

Stefanie earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science at Cal Polytechnic State University, San Louis Obispo.  While her emphasis was in equine sciences, she was educated in all aspects of livestock husbandry and production.  She attended graduate school at the University of California, Davis and earned a Masters degree in Animal Science and a PhD in Physiology.  Stefanie’s graduate research and dissertation focused on the maternal immune response to hybrid and interspecies pregnancy failure between the sheep and goat.  This work involved embryo manipulation, cryopreservation and transfer. She worked on the creation of transgenic swine and goats during her post-doctoral training.  After graduating, Stefanie took a position at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital’s Small Animal Nutrition Service.  Stefanie is currently a DNA analyst for the UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Lab and is responsible for parentage analysis and reporting for a variety of species including goat, sheep, cattle, bison, beefalo, alpaca, llama, elk, and deer.
